By the end of 2004, the total number of fixed lines was 21,268,
which corresponded to a telephone density of 26.4%. The mobile
sector has grown tremendously over the years to reach 54,368 phones
in December 2004. In other words, 67.9 % of the population has a
mobile phone and have more than double the number of fixed lines.
The three telecommunication operators namely Intelvision, Cable and Wireless
(Seychelles) Limited and Telecom (Seychelles limited, where the
latter is marketed under the brand name of Airtel, have contributed
significantly in attaining these achievements.
Today, the country has 3 Internet Service Providers (ISP) and
numerous Internet cafes on the three main islands (Mahe, Praslin and La Digue).
The 3 ISPs, namely Atlas Kokonet, IntelVision are connected to the international Internet
backbone via satellite through their own VSat. With regards to
connection to customers, the ISPs make available to their customers
a variety of connections such as from dial up, lease line and
wireless broadband. The availability of a variety of choices to
customers has contributed towards an annual growth and statistics
shows that in 2004, the number of Internet accounts have reached 3309.
